In fact, the Rapid Vehicle Motor Company — which evolved into GMC — was founded in 1902 in the Detroit area. GM bought Rapid in 1908, transforming the latter company into its own in-house commercial-vehicle division. The new brand was first known as the General Motors Truck Company, which was shortened to GMC as the years went by.
GMC began crossing over to “regular” customers in the 1990s as retail demand for trucks and SUVs began to rise. The brand’s appeal — and its vehicles — became so strong that the GMC Envoy was named the 2002 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year.
